Initiation of FKMC at WGCFNR - center of excellence in forestry

On the 25th of May 2024, Wondo Genet College of Forestry and Natural Resources (WGCFNR) of the Hawassa University; Ethiopian Forestry Development (EFD) and Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) held a fruitful discussion on the possibilities of establishing a national Forestry Knowledge Management Center (FKMC) at WGCFNR, which will then help to reassure the college’s claim as a center of excellence in forestry.

During the discussion, Deputy Director General of EFD Dr Motuma Tolera noted that WGCFNR is a renowned academic and research institution in the field of forestry. It has contributed significantly to the sector in producing professionals, research outputs, and providing consultancy and community services for a long period of time, hence, it deserves to host the establishment of the FKMC at the college.

Dr Emebet Bekele, the HU’s External Relation and Communication Directorate Director indicated the relevance of establishing such center for the university’s effort towards deferentiated research and autonomous institution. The Director, thus, suggested a quick action of implementing the idea following a similar discussion with the higher management officials of the University.

Acting Dean of the college Dr Beyene Teklu pointed out that the establishment of the FKMC will enhance the of the capacity of college to contribute more significantly to the forestry sector. He also aded that the college is very well in aposition and has sufficient and capabale manpower to host and run the intended Forestry Knowledge Management Center.

Dr Habtemariam Kassa (CIFOR), presented a paper with points of discussion on the possibilities of establishing and sustaining the FKMC, the goals and objective of the center as well as the following other issues were surfaced and discussed:

·       By collecting, archiving and sharing relevant forestry information the center will contribute to the development of the sector;

·       Can serve as an independent verifier and evaluating agent for different forestry programs and projects including carbon trading projects;

·       Avails relevant forestry data and information for researchers and policy makers;

·       Assist the college in digitalizing forestry education and trainings, and transform it into a digital campus;
